HOW LONG IS MAN’S LIFE ?

“Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure. Each man’s life is but a breath. Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. But now, Lord, what do I look for ? My hope is in you. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.”

Holy Bible

“We finish our years with a moan. The length of our days is seventy years or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.”

Holy Bible

In ancient China, during the Ming Dynasty, lived a poet named Tang Dor-Hu, He was an intelligent and broad minded scholar and once wrote a lyric: “Men seldom live to the age of seventy. I have now reached seventy: having been young and childish in my fist ten years and being old and frail in my last ten years. I spent half of the middle fifty years in sleep, leaving the other twenty-five years in worries and frustrations.”

This lyric points out that life is really very limited, proceeding from childhood to manhood to old age in a twinkling of an eye.

A man named Moses, well experienced in the ways of the world and having been through the ups and downs of life, once uttered the following prayer to God the Creator, “Thou hast placed our iniquities before Thee, our secret sins in the light of Thy presence. For all our days have declined in Thy fury; we have finished our years like a sign. As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, or if due to strength, eighty years, yet their pride is but labour and sorrow. For soon it is gone and we fly away... so teach us to number our days.”

A great king called David also prayed to God with a sigh, “Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the extent or my days. Let me know how transient I am. Behold, Thou has made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing in Thy sight; surely every man, at his best, is a mere breath. Surely every man walks about as a phantom; surely they make an uproar for nothing. He amasses riches, and does not know who will gather them. And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in Thee. Deliver me from all my transgressions;... for I am a stranger with Thee, a sojourner...”

Heed these three great men who have described life so realistically and eloquently. What the latter two said in their prayers, though uttered thousands of years ago, still hold true in this age of science, technology and space. Life today is still permeated with agony and vanity as a result of our sins.

Since the penalty of sin is death, We are all facing eternal condemnation. However, because God the Creator loves us so much, He was not willing that any of us should perish. Instead He send His only Son Jesus Christ to die on our behalf for our sins. And Jesus Christ did not merely die, He arose from the dead and ascended to Heaven on the third day, thus, gaining victory over death. Your life need not be without hope, for you too can have eternal life. You need only to believe in what Jesus Christ has accomplished for you on the cross and accept Him as your Saviour and the Lord in your life. We will all die sooner or later, but the question is where we will end up...in heaven or in hell? Remember...this is for all eternity.
