許多國家,慶祝二月十四日這天為情人節,即為情人所定的節日。傳統以為在這一天,人人可向他們所愛的人傾心吐意。

已往在情人節裏,有各種各樣的有趣風俗。例如:在意大利就有這樣的風俗,那年青的少女們在這日天未亮之前,很早就起床;然後,便站在那打開的窗口旁邊觀看。她們迷信頭一個走過的男人,便是命定為她們的情人。

在丹麥,過去就有這種風俗,就是人要寄一首詩給自己的情人。無論怎樣,人要用打點的暗號簽自己的姓名,好讓對方的情人能譯解出來。

在英國,女子們慣以在自己的枕頭上用針扣住栗樹的葉子。她們相信這樣做會引起她們作一種特殊的夢,使她們在夢中會看見自己的愛人。

今天,人們已不再守許多這樣的傳統了。然而,在許多國家裏,人們還仍然守着將卡片和糖菓寄給自己的情人或夫妻的這種風俗。

情人節,這樣持續不斷的流行,這就表明愛的需求乃是人類最基本需要之一。愛情是詩人和作曲家永不厭倦引用的主題。最近,有一首流行歌曲表達着人間愛情的重要性。這首歌曲寫道:「直到有人愛你,你才算為有用的人。」

然而,說起來很可憐,就是人間的愛情往往令我們失望。有一句諺話說:「我們常常傷害了我們所愛的人。」

各位朋友,你知道上帝愛你遠超過世上任何的情人嗎?聖經論到這種愛時,就說:「不是我們愛上帝,乃是上帝愛我們,差祂的兒子為我們的罪作了挽回祭,這就是愛了。」(新約聖經約翰壹書第四章十節)難道,你今天不接受祂的愛嗎?

February the 14th is a day that is celebrated in many countries as Valentine’s Day—the festival for lovers. Tradition holds that on this day one is supposed to express his affection for the one he loves.

In the past all sorts of interesting customs attatched to Valentine’s Day. In Italy, for instance, it was the custom for young maidens to rise long before daybreak on this day and post themselves at an open window. They superstitiously believed that the first man who passed was destined to be their sweet-heart.

In Denmark, it was the custom to send a rhyme to your sweetheart. Your name, however, was to be signed la a code of dots which he or she was supposed to decipher.

In England, girls used to pin bay leaves to their pillows believing that these would induce a special dream in which they would behold their loved one.

Today many of these traditions are no longer observed. However, in many countries the custom of sending one’s sweet-heart, or spouse, cards and candy is still observed.

The continuing popularity of Valentine’s Day reveals that the desire for love is one of the most basic needs of human-kind. Love is the constant tireless theme of poets and songwriters. The importance of human love is expressed in a recent popular song which states: “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You.”

Sad to say, however, human love often disappoints us: It is proverbial that “We always hurt the ones we love.”

My friend, do you know God loves you far greater than any human lover? It is of this love that The Bible speaks when it says: “Herein is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and gave His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (I John 4:10) Will you not accept His love today?
